چکیده

We investigated the repellency and toxicity of eight plant extracts containing celangulin, cnidium lactone, matrine, nicotine, pyrethrins, rotenone, stemonine veratrine against western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande; Thysanoptera: Thripidae). Flowers treated with 0.05% rotenone harbored fewer in two- multiple-choice bioassays. When evaluated at concentrations varying from 0.005% to 0.1% two-choice bioassays, pyrethrins were most repellent 0.01% 0.1%, nicotine was 0.025%. Mortality 76% 48 h, 78% 0.5% 72 100% h after contact fresh (<1-d-old) residue. Effective residue age 1 d for 5 aged residual Celangulin, matrine did not provide sufficient toxicity. Stemonine had inconsistent results. Therefore, additional evaluation its potential as a botanical insecticide will be needed. sprayed onto whole plants, caused unacceptable damage flowers, suggesting that final formulation need modified improve crop safety.

Development and Characterization of 18 Novel EST-SSRs from the Western Flower Thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande)

The western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), is an invasive species and the most economically important pest within the insect order Thysanoptera. For a better understanding of the genetic makeup and migration patterns of F. occidentalis throughout the world, we characterized 18 novel polymorphic EST-derived microsatellites. The mutational mechanism of these EST-SSRs was al...

Comparison of seven methods for rearing western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)

ABSTRACT-The species Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande),western flower thrips, is a highly polyphagous pest and an important vector of tospoviruses on several crops and ornamental plants. Western flower thrips has been introduced throughout the world and has been subject to many biological studies including mass rearing. In this survey, seven common mass rearing methods of F. occidentalis we...

Bulk development and stringent selection of microsatellite markers in the western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis

Recent improvements in next-generation sequencing technologies have enabled investigation of microsatellites on a genome-wide scale. Faced with a huge amount of candidates, the use of appropriate marker selection criteria is crucial. Here, we used the western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis for an empirical microsatellite survey and validation; 132,251 candidate microsatellites were id...

Repellency of Plant Extracts against the Legume Flower Thrips Megalurothrips sjostedti (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)

Megalurothrips sjostedti Trybom is an important pest of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) in Africa. To propose an alternative to chemical control, the repellency of 24 plant extracts was evaluated against adult female thrips of M. sjostedti in the laboratory. Plant extracts in ethanol were separately applied on a filter paper disk in a still air visual cue olfactometer. The results showed highly s...

A new attractant for monitoring western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis in protected crops

Monitoring of pest populations is an essential component of integrated pest management. An early warning system helps growers decide when best to take control measures, or when to alter them, should a control method prove inadequate. Studies have shown that adding chemical attractants to sticky cards can increase trap catch of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, a global pest of ...
